US-Israel attacks on Iran threaten global order

On Feb 28, the United States and Israel launched a joint military strike against Iran, codenamed "Epic Fury" by the US and "Roaring Lion" by Israel.

The official rationale presented by both nations is a familiar narrative of preemptive self-defense and regime change. The US justified the attack by citing the need to "protect the American people" from a "vicious and evil regime", while also presenting Iran's alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles as an existential threat to the US and its allies. Israel echoed this sentiment, stating the goal was to "eliminate the existential threat posed by Iran" and bring "true peace" to the region.

By invoking the pretext of national security, the US has once again mobilized its vast national resources and military power to wage an attack against a sovereign nation, assassinate its leaders and attempt to overthrow its government. This is not defense, it is the weaponization of state power to instill fear and force political change, a practice that should be universally condemned.

This pattern is not new. Since the turn of the millennium, the US has repeatedly used the banners of "freedom", "democracy", and "counter-terrorism" to launch illegal wars and interventions. The invasion of Iraq in 2003, based on fabricated claims of weapons of mass destruction, led to hundreds of thousands of deaths and the destabilization of the entire region. The prolonged war in Afghanistan, the 2011 bombing of Libya and ongoing involvement in Syria and Yemen are all testament to a pattern of behavior where powerful nations impose their will through violence.

Most recently, in January, US forces launched a military raid on Caracas to abduct Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife before transporting them to the US for a politically-motivated trial.

The latest assault on Iran will have three profound and devastating consequences for global stability.

First, it represents a catastrophic erosion of international law and order. The unilateral strike against Iran, without the authorization of the United Nations Security Council, flagrantly violates the UN Charter and the foundational principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. The targeted assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was a direct assault on the principle of sovereign equality among nations. Such actions signal a return to a "law of the jungle", where might makes right. This regression undermines decades of efforts to build a rules-based international order and sets a dangerous precedent that risks triggering a domino effect of instability across the globe.

Second, the economic fallout will be severe. The escalation in the Middle East has dealt a severe blow to an already fragile global economy. The immediate economic impact stems from the disruption of global energy supplies. Iran's retaliatory closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil trade, has sent shockwaves through energy markets.

Analysts warn that Brent crude could surge to $100-$150 per barrel, imposing a massive tax on the global economy, fueling inflation and forcing central banks to maintain restrictive monetary policies that stifle economic growth.

Beyond energy, the conflict has disrupted global supply chains, increased shipping and insurance costs, and triggered massive capital flight from emerging markets. The world now faces the specter of a new era of stagflation, reversing hard-won gains in post-pandemic recovery.

Finally, and most dangerously, the assassination of Ali Khamenei was not just a political act, it was a religious provocation. The most profound and dangerous consequence is the transformation of a geopolitical conflict into a potential civilizational war. The assassination has been perceived as a direct attack on the Islamic world by millions of Muslims. In response, Iran's highest religious authority, the 99-year-old Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi, issued a "Fatwa" (religious decree) declaring a religious "Jihad" against the leaders of the US and Israel.

This decree, which transcends national borders and time limits, calls upon the global Muslim community to take action. This transforms the conflict into a potential clash between the Christian-majority West and the Muslim world.

The international community must act. This moment demands more than condemnation, it requires concrete actions to restrain unilateral aggression and restore faith in a rules-based global order. The era of hegemonic unilateralism has failed.

What is urgently needed is a new model of global governance based on multilateralism, mutual respect and strict adherence to international law. Only by standing together can the global community restore certainty to world affairs, foster economic recovery, and ensure the national security of all nations, not just the most powerful ones.
