A bouncy fish ball captured the attention of deputies to the Guangdong People's Congress during a group discussion of the local annual legislative meeting in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, on Monday.

"It is so bouncy that it could be used as a table tennis ball," said Liang Shaozhong, general manager of Shantou Jinghua Food Co Ltd, while holding up a pristine white fish ball, a nationally protected geographical indication product.

Liang, also a deputy to the provincial people's congress, then gently tossed the fish ball on a plate, and it bounced with a crisp sound.

"Behind this bouncy fish ball are fresh fish supplied by marine ranches, green electricity transmitted by offshore wind power, a customer base gathered in coastal cities, and a global logistics network," said Liang.

The ball's production process, from selecting the fish to forming the ball, goes through rigorous procedures, according to Liang.

"It relies on seizing every moment to capture the freshness of the fish from the sea and relentless refinement to achieve ultimate elasticity," he said.

According to a government work report delivered by Guangdong Governor Meng Fanli on Monday, Guangdong would expand the modern marine industry during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30) by advancing the entire chain of modern marine ranch construction.

"The high-quality development of the marine economy is directly related to the business of seafood processing companies, allowing us to have access to better raw materials, cleaner energy, and broader markets," said Liang.

The government work report also highlighted the establishment of a national agricultural high-tech industry demonstration zone by developing local specialties, cultivating and protecting geographical indication products, and strengthening research and development of agricultural products.

"We are striving to create new opportunities for such an old flavor through standard improvement, research and innovation, and market expansion," he said.
