When Tang Feng, a veteran erhu (Chinese fiddle) player and the president of the China National Traditional Orchestra, reviewed the ensemble's repertoire over the years, he was struck by the fact that many exceptional works had rarely, if ever, been performed.

"With the orchestra's long history and deep musical heritage, these compositions are hidden gems, waiting to be rediscovered. Some were classics, others forgotten pieces, each with its own story," he says.

Yet for years, they had been quietly tucked away in the orchestra's extensive library, overshadowed by newer compositions and the demands of modern performances.

That realization led Tang to initiate the orchestra's first formal music season this year. As one of China's largest traditional ensembles, with a 66-year history, the orchestra is now seeking to both honor its past and reintroduce overlooked repertoire, while also commissioning and presenting new works.

The season would embody the country's rich musical traditions, tied to the cycles of the seasons, the 24 solar terms, and the rhythm of the Chinese calendar.

"This plan is not just about presenting concerts. It is about embedding Chinese national music into the everyday lives and cultural celebrations of the people," Tang notes.
