Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping and the World Health Organization's goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis, or TB, and HIV/AIDS, called for active international support and participation in TB prevention and treatment while highlighting the progress in China's fight against the disease.

She made the remarks on Wednesday in a written statement to a virtual event commemorating the WHO World TB Day 2026, which falls on Tuesday. The virtual event was themed "Yes! We Can End TB! Led by countries, powered by people".

Peng was appointed the WHO's goodwill ambassador for TB and HIV/AIDS in 2011, and her role was renewed in 2017. For more than a decade, she has consistently advocated for a stronger response to these diseases at major international events.

Hailing the WHO and the international community for their strong commitment to protecting people's health and ending the TB epidemic, Peng noted that substantial and effective work has been done toward this goal, reversing the trend of continuous growth in TB cases.

Elaborating on China's efforts against TB, she emphasized that the Chinese government has always attached great importance to preventing and treating TB, coordinating efforts across multiple departments to implement response measures.

It has also leveraged scientific and technological innovation to accelerate advancements in TB prevention and treatment technologies, driving the continuous improvement of such work, she added.

Peng pointed out that China's healthcare network, covering more than 1.4 billion urban and rural residents, has effectively improved access to TB prevention and treatment services, contributing to a sustained decline in TB incidence and positioning China as a country with moderate to low TB prevalence.

This year marks the 15th year of China's large-scale volunteer campaign to raise awareness about TB prevention and control. Over the past 15 years, more than 1 million volunteers have participated in this campaign, carrying out over 80,000 programs.

"I have been joining many of them on visits to local neighborhoods, schools and healthcare facilities, and I am a proud witness of their compassion, commitment and contribution, as well as the progress in China's fight against TB," Peng said.

She called on people from all walks of life in all countries to act, to support and to participate in the global efforts against TB, in order to bring greater benefits to all humanity and build a community of health for all.
