China's anti-graft authorities reveal extent of year's work

China's top anti-graft authorities filed cases against 181 officials?directly administered by the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 2025, according to the work report of the fifth plenary session of the 20th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), which was released on Saturday.

High-profile figures investigated included Wang Lixia, the former chairwoman of the Inner Mongolia autonomous regional government, Jiang Chaoliang, former Party secretary of Hubei province, and Yi Huiman, chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission.

The fifth plenary session of the 20th CCDI was held in Beijing from Jan 12 to 14 and adopted a work report delivered by Li Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the inspection commission.

The work report also revealed that discipline inspection and supervisory authorities filed more than 1 million cases in 2025 and placed 47,000 individuals under detention. A total of 983,000 people received Party disciplinary or administrative punishment. Some 26,000 individuals voluntarily surrendered.

The report said 150,000 cases involving hedonism and extravagance were investigated, along with 141,000 cases related to formalism and bureaucratism. In total, 376,000 people were criticized, educated or disciplined in connection with such misconduct.

In 2025, a total of 505 cross-border corruption cases were filed. Under the "Sky Net 2025", a campaign to hunt down fugitives and recover illegal proceeds, along with a special operation targeting overseas recovery of illicit gains from duty-related crimes, 963 fugitives were brought back to China.

The report also highlighted intensified efforts to tackle corruption affecting the public at the grassroots level. The CCDI and the NCS directly handled or supervised 8,116 cases involving misconduct and corruption that harmed public interests. Nationwide, 967,000 related cases were investigated, 627,000 individuals were disciplined and 22,000 cases were transferred to procuratorial authorities.

Meanwhile, authorities resolved more than 3.7 million urgent public concerns and returned 77.63 billion yuan ($11.32 billion) in recovered funds and assets to the public.
