Hainan's special customs operations signal greater openness

China is intensifying its institutional opening-up by moving toward "special customs operations" in the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP).
According to Zhao Zhongxiu, president of the University of International Business and Economics, the operations involve shifting the customs border inward and implementing a series of preferential policies within the island, allowing Hainan to become more open and better connected to the world.
Zhao added that amid the ongoing geopolitical conflicts and China–US trade frictions, the development of the Hainan FTP is helping to overcome the current barriers and restrictions on people-to-people and technological exchanges.
