China and the United States should work together to create good conditions for cooperation to tackle climate change, which can be "a new highlight" of bilateral cooperation, Vice-Foreign Minister Xie Feng said at a briefing on Tuesday after President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden held a virtual meeting.

China, which has announced goals to peak its emissions of carbon dioxide before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, will spend the shortest time completing the largest cut in emissions intensity in the world, Xie said.

The goals require a lot of hard work to achieve, as China is still the largest developing country in the world, he said, calling for countries to stick to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, "blame less and cooperate more".

Also, developed countries should fulfill their historical duties carefully and ensure consistency in their policies, Xie said.
