BEIJING -- China's top legislature on Wednesday held a joint inquiry into a report on the development of a modern comprehensive transportation system.

Li Zhanshu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

Wang Dongming, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the meeting.

During the inquiry, six lawmakers asked questions about measures to implement decisions and plans on building China into a country with an advanced transportation system. The lawmakers also enquired about efforts to build a safe and reliable international logistics supply chain system, among others.

State Councilor Wang Yong and officials from central government agencies, including the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Finance, attended the meeting to hear suggestions and answer questions.

Addressing the meeting, Li stressed the importance of being aware of the difficulties and problems the country is facing in developing transportation, urging efforts to modernize the country's transportation system.

He also called for efforts to speed up the establishment of a legal framework and a standard system befitting the modern comprehensive transportation system.
