BEIJING
856 mafia gangs busted in 2019
A total of 856 mafia-style organizations and 2,458 other gangs have been busted during the past year, and authorities have seized 256 billion yuan ($37.6 billion) of assets involved in such crimes and solved 138,000 cases involving organized crimes, official data show. The trend of cracking down on organized crimes has been consolidated and the public security situation has continued to improve. The number of criminal cases nationwide dropped by 6.2 percent from January to August this year, according to the national leading group against organized crime under the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

Film festival opens in central China
The China Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival 2020 opened on Thursday in Zhengzhou, central China's Henan province. Film-related exhibitions and forums will be held during the three-day event, and films will be screened for the public at 101 outdoor spots in the city. The winners of the 35th Hundred Flowers Awards will be announced on Saturday. Jointly initiated by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the China Film Association in 1992, the film festival is one of the most professional and authoritative film festivals on the Chinese mainland.
