The metro lines of today had not been constructed while taxis were both few and expensive for ordinary people. Food, melons, were being brought by bicycle into local markets such as one adjacent to my hotel where I wandered around wondering what the different vegetables were. Certainly food appeared in abundance, was fresh and from what I could see, cheap. It was priced in small money denomination such as the 'jiao' Again, experiences so unlike my norm of supermarket shopping!
