Man detained after jumping from skyscraper
Beijing police confirmed on Wednesday that a foreigner was placed in administrative detention for BASE jumping from a high building under construction in the city's central business district.
The Beijing Public Security Bureau said the male jumper was detained for 10 days on a charge of disturbing public order. It did not release the man's name or nationality.
Beijing Youth Daily reported the jumper as Alex Pykhov, an extreme sports enthusiast, who jumped from the 500-meter level of Citic Tower, which is being built in Jianguomenwai, Chaoyang district, on April 1. The tower will be the city's tallest building.
The jumper was detained the next day, the police said, though they wouldn't confirm the information when contacted by China Daily on Wednesday.
The jump apparently took place with little fanfare. Employees in the tower's sales department and in a nearby building said they had not heard about the incident.
Pykhov's social media accounts contain many pictures and videos of his BASE jumping exploits.
