Romanian parliamentary majority names new candidate for PM

Xinhua | Updated: 2016-12-29 01:27

BUCHAREST - The Romanian parliamentary majority on Wednesday decided to name Sorin Grindeanu, a former minister, as the country's prime minister, after a previous nomination was rejected by the president.

The move announced by Social Democrats' leader Liviu Dragnea, instead of taking radical step to impeach President Klaus Iohannis, has temporarily eased an imminent political crisis in the country.

Dragnea stressed that they decided not to start the impeachment process of the president, with main consideration to ensure the stability of the country, to set up the government as soon as possible to fulfill their election commitments.

Grindeanu, 43, became chairman of Timis County after the local election in June 2016. He has been a member of the Social Democratic Party since 1996 and was Minister for Information Society between Dec 2014-Nov 2015.
