China-Maldives strengthen ties

(Xinhua) Updated: 2015-01-21 15:47

MALE -- Relations between Maldives and China had developed exponentially over the past few years, China's ambassador to the island nation said on Tuesday.

Chinese Ambassador Wang Fukang made the remarks at a ceremony to officially hand over 150 motorbikes gifted by the Chinese government to Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Ambassador Wang specifically spoke of the increase in cooperation between police services of both countries, noting the increase in number of Maldivian police officers participating in Chinese training programs year by year.

He expressed hope the gift of motorbikes would lead to increase in Maldivian police capability, and enhance cooperation between the two countries.

The Chinese ambassador also thanked Maldivian police for the important role they played in protecting Chinese tourists who visit the country.

"As a result of this important assistance provided by Maldivian police, Chinese tourists are awarded the opportunity to safely experience the beauty of Maldives," he said.

After accepting the gift of motorbikes on behalf of the MPS, Commissioner of Police Hussein Waheed said, "With this assistance, we have taken a step up in providing our services."

He noted the major challenges Maldivian police were facing due to lack of infrastructure and resources.
