Gadhafi escorted family to Algerian border

Xinhua | Updated: 2011-10-10 20:42

ALGIERS - Toppled Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi had reportedly escorted his family members to the border with Algeria on August 29 to make sure of their safe entry into the neighboring country, an Algerian newspaper said Monday.

The Arabic-language daily El Khabar quoted a well-informed Algerian source as saying that Gadhafi himself did not request to enter Algeria, and stayed at a spot close to the border, waiting for the Algerian authorities to allow the entry of his family members, including his wife Safia, his daughter Aisha, his sons Mohamed and Hannibal, and his grandsons.

Algeria permitted the entry of the Gadhafi family on August 29 on humanitarian ground.

Gadhafi's whereabouts remain unknown since fighters of the Libyan National Transitional Council captured the country's capital Tripoli and stormed his Bab Al-Azizya compound.
