Saudi government approved on Monday joining the Convention on Nuclear Safety, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

During a cabinet meeting under King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz, the government approved joining the convention adopted in Vienna on June 17, 1994. A royal decree to be issued in this regard, the report said. In mid-May of 2008, the White House announced major cooperation agreements with Saudi Arabia on civil nuclear power.

On January 24, Mohammed Salim Sorour al-Sabban who heads Saudi's UN climate negotiations, ruled out developing an atomic energy program in the country, saying that Riyadh seeks to focus on solar energy.
