KABUL: The Afghan police have launched an operation in the relatively peaceful northeast Badakhshan province and discovered a huge ammunition cache, Abdul Maroof Rasikh, spokesman for the provincial administration said Monday.

"The operation was launched in Wardoch district on Sunday and wrapped up on the same day," Rasikh said, adding "more than 2,000 explosive devices and shells including 56 anti-personnel mines were discovered."

The spokesman failed to disclose whether any arrest was made in this case, but added that similar operations would be launched in other districts of the province to ensure "the lasting peace".

The Afghan government, as part of efforts to strengthen peace, has been striving to collect arms from illegal armed men and groups across the militancy-ridden country.
