Mexico seeks to host 2026 World Cup

(Xinhua) Updated: 2014-12-11 10:14

MEXICO CITY - Mexico will seek to host the 2026 World Cup, the president of the Mexican Football Federation (Femexfut), Justino Compean, said Tuesday.

At a press conference in Mexico City, Compean said "we have the infrastructure and our stadiums are being remodeled ... so we have the venues to give (the US and Canada) a good fight," El Universal daily reported.

Those two countries are also competing to host football's top global event, according to Compean.

The head of Femexfut said Mexico City's iconic Aztec Stadium will be getting a face lift for its 50th birthday, and a new stadium is set to be inaugurated in the northern capital of Monterrey, bolstering the country's football infrastructure over the next two years.

"We have the right to raise our hand" and bid, he added, according to news magazine Proceso.

Compean was accompanied at the conference by the president of regional football body Concacaf (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football), Jeffrey Webb.

The conference was held to announce the new sponsor of Concacaf tournaments, Scotiabank.

Mexico previously hosted two World Cups, in 1970 and 1986.
