LONDON - Former US PGA champion David Toms has withdrawn from next week's British Open at Royal St George's due to a hip injury, organisers said on Thursday.

The American's place will go to Briton Simon Dyson and Thomas Bjorn, the Dane who allowed the 2003 British Open title to slip through his fingers the last time the major was staged at Royal St George's, is now first reserve.

The 44-year-old Toms, US PGA champion in 2001, completed only nine holes in the first round of the US Tour's John Deere Classic on Thursday before pulling out of the tournament.
