From the spectacle point of view, the Briton felt there was still some way to go, however.
"When I turn on the telly and I watch 10 laps and there's a car going round and not much happening, at least I want to feel like that guy is really on the edge," he said.
"It's difficult to see that.
"You ask yourself whether the king has actually got any clothes on after some of the races.
"You hear people eulogising and talking about great drives and stuff and you think 'I've just sat here for an hour and a half and my heartbeat hardly got above what was necessary to make a cup of tea'."
