The 33-year-old Roman, who started on pole position, took his third career victory and his first since the opening race of last season.

Fisichella finished 4.5 seconds ahead of Spaniard Alonso, with Briton Jenson Button rounding out the podium for Honda.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya was fourth for McLaren ahead of Felipe Massa, who started on the back row of the grid, and the Brazilian's Ferrari team mate Michael Schumacher.

Jacques Villeneuve finished seventh to give the new BMW team their first points, while Ralf Schumacher was eighth for Toyota after starting alongside Massa on the back row.

Championship contender Kimi Raikkonen crashed out of the race in the first lap after his McLaren was clipped by Christian Klien's Red Bull, leaving Alonso seven points clear of seven-times champion Schumacher and Button in the title race.

Renault lead the constructors' standings with 28 points, ahead of Ferrari and McLaren on 15.
