Lei Xiaoning, dubbed "China's No 1 painter of horses" south of the Yangtze, will hold his three-day solo exhibition in Beijing from tomorrow at the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution.

The 57-year-old Hunan native, moved to Nanjing with his family when he was 8, and came under the tutelage of Liu Ruli, himself a disciple of China's most renowned modern painter of horses, Xu Beihong (1895-1953).

In 2003, Lei's Galloping Horses was chosen for the Great Hall of the People, while the National people's Congress picked his 10,000 Horses Galloping Ahead, the next year.

His solo show is being organized by the China Association for International Friendly Contact, headed by former foreign minister Li Zhaoxing.
