Catherine Zeta-Jones heads to Broadway

Catherine Zeta-Jones is to star in the Broadway show 'A Little Night Music'.

The Hollywood beauty - who won an Oscar for her performance in 2002 movie 'Chicago' - is due to hit the stage for the revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical about the romantic lives of several couples alongside British-born actress Angela Lansbury.

The 83-year-old TV, film and theatre star only accepted the role on the premise she would be working with a highly-rated co-star in New York's celebrated theatre district.

The New York Post newspaper reported: "The great Angela Lansbury agreed to play Madame Armfeldt, provided the producers lined up another star to play her daughter, Desiree.

"Lansbury didn't want to shoulder a multi-million dollar Broadway revival by herself."

Catherine reportedly accepted the role after receiving a personal call from Sondheim.

The third London revival of the show ended in March following a four-month stint at the Menier Chocolate Factory theatre.

In February, it was reported 'Mission Impossible' star Vanessa Redgrave, 72, and her daughter Natasha Richardson had expressed an interest in working together in the show.

A month later, Natasha died tragically following a skiing accident aged 45.
