The mascot is a white-headed leaf monkey, an endangered species that only inhabits China's southwest Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, the host province of the CAEXPO. It represents the theme of the CAEXPO, which is friendship, cooperation, development and prosperity.

It is named Hehe, meaning cooperation and integration in Chinese, embodying the CAEXPO's aims of “fueling CAFTA construction and sharing opportunities for cooperation and development.”

The pronunciation of Hehe sounds like peace and harmony in Chinese, representing the China-ASEAN strategic partnership for peace and prosperity. The mascot not only encompasses Chinese culture and the unique culture of Guangxi, but also integrates distinctive cultures of the ASEAN countries.
