Traditional art is no monkey business

Traditional art is no monkey business
Sun Huaizhong works on his art piece Maohou, which literally means monkey, in a rented room in Beijing, April 13, 2011. The 55-year old came from Central China's Henan province to Beijing 10 years ago and became interested in the handicraft after hearing on TV that the art is almost extinct. From then on he devoted most of his time learning and working on the traditional form which dates back more than 150 years. The monkeys' heads, arms and legs are made from cicada sloughs, and their bodies from buds of magnolia flowers. He lives on selling the handicraft, which doesn't bring much money. But Sun said his job is worth doing if the art becomes known by more people and carries on. [Photo/Xinhua]
