Disaster training is important

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-04-26 20:18

The Chinese government should learn from Japan on preparing communities to deal with disasters, says an article in the 21st Century Business Herald (excerpts below).

Japan's experience shows that about 80 percent of people are rescued in the first 15 minutes after an earthquake. Most of these rescues are carried out before professional teams arrive on the scene.

Japan organizes emergency training regularly. Social organizations, communities and volunteers play vital roles in disaster relief efforts.

China has the largest population in the world and is frequently hit by natural disasters.

Greater training and preparation will help it reduce the death toll.
