Pingtan, the closest city on the mainland to Taiwan, has been actively promoting cultural and economic communication and exchanges with Taiwan in recent years.

According to Lin Xi, president of Fujian association of cycling sports, the events featuring a combination of sports and tourism such as the cycling race might be a wonderful way to further the city's progressive relationship with Taiwan.
