On Nov 16, a publicity assembly on renaming “Luxi city” to “Mangshi city” was held in Mangshi’s conference hall, and the name will be officially announced during the grand celebration ceremony on Dec 29.
Mangshi, or Luxi, is the capital city of Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, a place of mysterious Buddhist temples and gold pagodas, and a pearl on Yunnan's western border.
Cai Sihong, party secretary of Mangshi city, described the significance of renaming the city and organized a series of celebrations at the publicity meeting.
“Renaming ‘Luxi’ to ‘Mangshi’ is a way of inheriting the history and helping increase the place’s visibility,” Cai said. As a matter of fact, the name Luxi has caused confusion and become an obstacle to the city’s economic, cultural and social development, while the name Mangshi, once used in history, may gain the city great recognition and help build the city’s image.
To publicize Mangshi, the municipal government is planning some events before the actual celebration ceremony on Dec 29, such as local featured performances, business and trade exhibition, and mass entertainment activities.
