Brand 除了“商標(biāo)、牌子”的意思外，還有一個(gè)意思是：“烙印”，例如：These cattle have my brand on them.（這些牛身上打了烙印，標(biāo)明是我的牛。）因此，brand-new的意思應(yīng)該是“像新打成的鐵器一樣新”。英國(guó)大文豪莎士比亞筆下就多次出現(xiàn)fire new這個(gè)詞，意思和brand-new沒有區(qū)別。和brand的這個(gè)意思相關(guān)的成語(yǔ)還有：snatch a brand from the burning，意思是“釜底抽薪”。
