據(jù)說(shuō)mad as a hatter的起源和古英格蘭制帽子的工匠有關(guān)。
在制作氈帽的過(guò)程中，貍皮和兔皮需要用含汞的硝酸鹽進(jìn)行處理從而便于加工。制帽工匠呼吸過(guò)程中不可避免的吸入水銀并導(dǎo)致水銀中毒，從而使神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)受到傷害，伴隨口齒不清，蹣跚的步履，肌肉不斷抽搐等癥狀。神經(jīng)錯(cuò)亂也表現(xiàn)為這些癥狀，所以mad as a hatter就有了描述某人"瘋狂"的用法。
加拿大作家Thomas Haliburton在其故事集The Clockmaker (1837 《鐘表匠》)中使用了mad as a hatter，這也是這個(gè)短語(yǔ)第一次出現(xiàn)在文學(xué)作品中："Sister Sall...walked out of the room, as mad as a hatter." 關(guān)于mad as a hatter的起源實(shí)際上還有其它說(shuō)法。一專(zhuān)門(mén)登載城市傳奇故事的網(wǎng)站認(rèn)為 mad as an hatter是"象蝰蛇一樣惡毒"的意思。該網(wǎng)站引用1901年出版的Edwards's Words, Facts, and Phrases說(shuō)，mad 在Anglo-Saxon語(yǔ)言里的意思是惡毒，狠毒，而hatter是adder(蝰蛇的一種)的變體, 所以mad as a hatter的意思是象蝰蛇一樣惡毒。
這家網(wǎng)站還引用了A Dictionary of Common Fallacies的說(shuō)法，即《艾麗斯奇境歷險(xiǎn)記》的作者Lewis Carroll不是不知道adder的意思是惡毒的蝰蛇，只不過(guò)是John Tenniel給《艾麗斯奇境歷險(xiǎn)記》所畫(huà)的頭戴一頂大帽子的小矮人插圖誤導(dǎo)了讀者。但是，這種說(shuō)法站不住腳，從作品的上下文可推測(cè)出mad并沒(méi)有惡毒的意思。請(qǐng)參照下面涉及Mad Hatter的原文摘錄：

按照Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable的說(shuō)法，Carroll 作品主人公是以當(dāng)?shù)匾粋€(gè)叫做Theophilus Carter 的家具商為原形的。這個(gè)人希行為古怪，好戴一頂高帽子，人們根據(jù)其諸多古怪行為而稱(chēng)之為the Mad Hatter。
既然在19世紀(jì)上半葉制帽工匠水銀中毒及其中毒后的癥狀確實(shí)被證明有互為因果的關(guān)系，可以說(shuō)硬要把mad as a hatter的來(lái)源和'惡毒的蝰蛇'聯(lián)系在一起就顯得有些牽強(qiáng)附會(huì)了。
