US secretary of state makes surprise visit to Iraq

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made an unannounced visit to Iraq on Friday in a daylong trip aimed at reducing sectarian tensions just five weeks before elections.

The top U.S. diplomat's trip was kept secret because of secuirity concerns until she landed in Mosul, northern Iraq, where she was set to be briefed by the U.S. ambassador and U.S. military officials over U.S. efforts to stabilise Iraq ahead of the December 15 elections.
