Grease plant loses pollution lawsuit

Two peasant farmers in north China 's port city Tianjin have been compensated
US$65,000 for jujube trees killed by poisonous emissions from a neighboring
grease manufacturer.
Liu Zijiang and Feng Guiying planted 15 hectares of wild jujubes in March,
2000, but found in the following year that some trees had died for no apparent
reason.
Convinced that emissions from a nearby grease plant were the killer, the
couple filed a lawsuit in 2002, demanding compensation of 2.5 million yuan
(US$300,000).
After thorough investigation into the case, the No. 2 Intermediate People's
Court of Tianjin ruled recently that the grease plant, a collectively-owned
enterprise sponsored by the local radiation administration, should compensate
the Liu couple 541,314 yuan (US$65,000).
