Stanford economist named head of Hong Kong university
( 2003-10-13 15:47) (Agencies)

The Chinese University of Hong Kong on Monday appointed Stanford University economist Lawrence Lau as its next leader.

Lau, who specializes in Asian economies, has agreed to serve a six-year term beginning July 1, 2004, the Hong Kong university said in a statement.

The 58-year-old scholar is a US citizen who spent his early years in Hong Kong before studying in the United States, where he has remained since, local television reported.

Lau's predecessor, Arthur Li, left last year to become the territory's education and manpower secretary.
