Trade code upholds maids' rights
( 2003-08-27 14:51) (China Daily)

Prospective employers are required to disclose family members' health conditions, eating habits and temperaments to domestic helpers in a new trade regulation.

The Standards and Requirements of Domestic Help Service, drafted by the Quality and Skill Supervision Bureau of Shenzhen, will take effect next month, reports Guangzhou Daily.

While stipulating measures preventing theft of and damage to employers' properties, the regulation also stresses the protection of domestic helpers' rights.

Employers are required to specify on contracts a helper's regular working hours and compensation for overtime.

Meanwhile, agencies must verify the backgrounds of domestic helpers and provide health certificates for them.
