Kim Byung-jong's paintings demonstrate an intense power of expression and vitality, while one can also feel the underlying spirit of renovation.

Kim, a professor at Seoul National University, explores oriental aesthetics by painting bold but simple subjects on traditional Korean paper. He revisits motifs such as the big red flower, birds and red cranes to present a primitive and poetic touch. He advocates a return to simplicity and grace against the sophistication of an industrialized world.

"I want to create a touching and alive painting. Through the movement of the brush, I hope to sing a song about the beauty of life," he said.

Kim's exhibition Song of Life is at the Today Art Museum until March 9.
