WASHINGTON - The number of US forces in Afghanistan has surpassed the number in Iraq for the first time since the 2003 invasion to topple Saddam Hussein, the Pentagon said late on Monday.

There were 94,000 troops in Afghanistan as of last weekend compared with 92,000 in Iraq.

The milestone reflects the priorities of the Obama administration, which has ordered a rapid escalation in Afghanistan and a drawdown in Iraq.
