BEIJING-- Vice President Li Yuanchao called for joint efforts to build a "community of common destiny for world peace and security" as he addressed a seminar attended by some 500 Chinese and foreign participants on Saturday.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the fourth World Peace Forum at Tsinghua University, Li said every country needs to foster a sense of togetherness as the 7.2 billion citizens of this planet are all in the same boat journey together.

He stressed that China is a proponent, supporter and facilitator for building a community of common destiny.

President Xi Jinping's initiatives of building a community of common destiny for all mankind as well as for specific regions have received broad recognition and positive response from the international community, according to Li.

China will help create opportunities and dividends of development for over four billion Asians, Europeans and Africans by advancing the building of the "Belt and Road" and encouraging the alignment of development strategies of countries along the routes, said Li.

China has also made important contribution to improving the global climate and protecting the environment by making vigorous efforts on energy conservation and emissions reduction, Li said.

The vice president called on the participants to act on the principles of understanding, consultation and reciprocity wherever possible in the community building process.

With the theme of "Overcome Difficulties: Understanding, Consultation and Reciprocity", the fourth World Peace Forum is being held from Saturday to Sunday in Beijing. The participants include scholars, diplomats and former foreign leaders.

Organized by Tsinghua University in partnership with the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, the annual forum is China's first high-level non-governmental seminar focusing on international security.
