BEIJING - H7N9 bird flu cases in China reached 134 by the end of August with a newly reported patient in South China's Guangdong province, the country's health watchdog said Tuesday.

According to a monthly bulletin from the National Health and Family Planning Commission, one death was reported last month, bringing the total to 45, while 86 patients had recovered.

The newly reported case is a 51-year-old female in Huizhou city, Guangdong. She had been a poultry slaughtering worker at a local marketplace for many years, local health department said earlier.

A 61-year-old man with H7N9 died of multiple organ failure on August 12, local authorities said.

The patient was transferred from the city of Langfang in north China's Hebei Province to Beijing for treatment on July 18. He tested positive for the H7N9 virus on July 20.

According to the bulletin, infections have been recorded in 12 provinces and municipalities.
