Number of torture cases falls

By WANG XIAODONG | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-06-27 21:46

The number of criminal cases involving torture for forced confession decreased by 87 percent last year compared to the previous year, Beijing News reported on Thursday.

Camera monitoring systems have been installed in more than 90 percent of China’s police stations after renovations, to ensure the whole process of interrogation is audio and video taped, Guo Shengkun, minister of public security, said on Wednesday.

Guo delivered the report to a meeting of the Standing Committee of National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature.

Judicial authorities must strictly follow the law and correct any wrongful cases to prevent wrong rulings, Guo said.
