On December 12, 1936, Chiang Kai-shek, the leader of the Kuomintang was suddenly arrested and kidnapped by Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng. To end the civil war and fight Japan unanimously, the Communist Party of China sent representatives to Xi'an to help negotiate.
