Guangdong sets out plan to fight crime

By ZHENG CAIXIONG (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2012-10-09 20:27

The Party chief of Guangdong province has promised to turn it into one of the safest regions in China in 5 to 10 years, despite it currently having one of the highest crime rates.

"Our aim is to create long-term stability in this southern province, which borders Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions," Wang Yang said during a television interview.

"Ensuring a safe Guangdong is an important part of creating a happy Guangdong."

The province has mapped out a 10-year crime plan, he added, urging local government departments to help create a safer environment.

He also warned that people who failed to do their jobs properly could be removed from their posts.

Luo Juan, deputy director-general of Guangdong provincial department of public security, said police across the province will spare no effort in fighting crime over the coming years.

"Priority will be given to dealing with serious crimes including robbery, rape, abduction, fraud and organized crime," he said.
