CANCUN, Mexico - The climate negotiation between China and the United States is moving in the right direction, and both parties have a lot of areas in agreement, said Jonathan Pershing, the US deputy special envoy for climate change, at the first news briefing of the US delegation in the ongoing United Nations’ climate change conference in Cancun.

Pershing cited the two countries’ relations as “most important” in the climate talks as both are the biggest carbon emitters and energy consumers. “There are things we did not agree,” Pershing said. “But…we are having serious discussions with the Chinese party.” “We have a lot of areas in agreement.”

Today is the first day of the Cancun meeting, Pershing said, so it’s still too early to draw a conclusion about what might come up between the two nations. But this special envoy noted that both of the countries have agreed to take action, and the process is moving forward.
