The hearing of Xie Zaixing, 48, was held at the Intermediate People's Court in Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang. No verdict was given Tuesday.

Xie, former chief of the Communist Party of China's Committee in Ouhai District, Wenzhou City, was accused of suffocating Shao Huiling, a woman with whom he had a nine-year extramarital relationship, to death after they had a dispute in Shao's home in Hangzhou on Nov 15, 2009, said the prosecutors.

Xie had cut up Shao's body and dumped the pieces into the Oujiang River later that night. Then, he tried every means to make others believe that she was still alive, they said.

Shao's family reported her missing to the Hangzhou City Public Security Bureau in March this year. Xie was arrested in April and his case was referred to the city's procuratorate one month later. Xie was charged with murder.

Xie pleaded for a lenient sentence saying he had covered Shao's mouth just to stop her from screaming and had not intentionally killed her.

Shao's relatives wept during the court proceedings.
