TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Aso Taro's visit to China later this week is aimed at improving mutual trust between the leaders of the two countries and deepening mutual beneficial cooperation, said a Japanese Foreign Ministry official Tuesday.

"The visit is highly meaningful to improve high-level dialogues, strengthen mutual trust and cooperation between China and Japan," said Kazuo Kodama, Press Secretary of the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

Kodama said that Aso will exchange views during his visit with Chinese leaders on topics such as environment, energy, personnel exchanges, wireless communication, the ongoing international financial crisis, regional security and the measures on how to build the "strategic mutually beneficial relations."

Kodama also briefly reviewed the past five visits between leaders from Japan and China. He said Japan hoped to candidly exchange opinions with China on bilateral, regional and global issues in a bid to push forward cooperation.

Aso Taro heads to Beijing on Wednesday for a two-day official visit.
