BEIJING - Foreign ministers of China and Japan held talks on Saturday about how to improve bilateral ties and work together on regional issues.

"The Chinese government highly values the relations with Japan. Let's take your visit as an opportunity to step up bilateral relations and communication on important regional issues," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said.

"As Japan-China relations are now confronted with some difficulties, I would like to communicate with China on how to advance the ties," Japan's Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone said.

During their talks at the Diaoyutai Guesthouse in downtown Beijing, the two foreign ministers were expected to exchange views on Sino-Japanese relations and international and regional issues of common concern, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

This is Nakasone's first official visit to China since he took office last September.
