Death toll from typhoon Kalmaegi rises to 16 in Taiwan

Updated: 2008-07-19 15:28 TAIBEI -- Death toll from tropical storm Kalmaegi in Taiwan Province of China rose to 16, and 11 others remained missing, according to the official tally as of Saturday. Kalmaegi made a landfall near Ilan in northern Taiwan late on Thursday when it was a typhoon bringing with it heavy rains. The southern part of the island province had rain up to 600 millimeters within seven hours after the tropical storm landed, which collapsed drainage, causing most of the casualties. Kalmaegi weakened into a severe tropical storm at 2 a.m. Friday and hit eastern Fujian Province on Friday evening. The eye of the storm was in east China's Zhejiang Province on Saturday morning, and continued to move inland. |
