BEIJING - The number of reported cases of dengue - a potentially fatal, mosquito-borne disease - in south China has risen by 95 to 219, the Xinhua News Agency said.

The new cases were reported between Thursday and Monday, Xinhua said, citing local health officials who did not give any details.

No deaths have been reported and 111 people have recovered, it said. The rest were being treated in hospitals, Xinhua said.

Dengue causes severe fever and can lead to vomiting, nausea and body rash. It can cause severe pain in the joints. Also called bone-breaker's disease, some dengue strains cause internal bleeding and death.

Small scale outbreaks have been reported in Guangdong and neighboring Fujian province since the 1990s, Xinhua said.

The latest Guangdong cases include 192 in the provincial capital of Guangzhou, 20 in the city of Yangjiang, five in Foshan and one each in Zhuhai and Chaozhou, the agency said.
