The former deputy commander of China's navy was dismissed from a seat in parliament on Thursday on corruption charges, the government announced.

Vice Adm. Wang Shouye, 62, was accused of abusing his position to take bribes, the Xinhua News Agency said.

Wang is one of the most senior Chinese military officials to be punished in a multiyear crackdown on official corruption.

He was dismissed earlier as deputy commander of the navy of the People's Liberation Army after a young woman with whom he was having an affair reported his misconduct in January, Xinhua said.

The report didn't give any details of the corruption case against Wang or say what criminal charges he might face.

It said he submitted a resignation letter to parliament in March after being removed as deputy navy commander for taking bribes and for "loose morals."
