Hong Kong Customs officers of Lo Wu cross-border control point found upon an incoming passenger arriving from Shenzhen a live "Hwamei" at a value of 100 HK dollars (12.8 U.S. dollars) on Saturday afternoon and the 35-year-old local male passenger was arrested.

According to a government press release, the arrested passenger together with the bird were referred to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up actions.

The Customs officers reminded the public to have import license from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department before importation of live birds into Hong Kong.

They said any illegal importing of live birds will be liable to prosecution under the Public Health (Animals and Birds) Ordinance, Chapter 139.

The maximum penalty is a fine of 25,000 HK dollars (3,205 U.S. dollars).
