BEIJING -- German carmaker BMW will recall more than 2,000 X5 SUVs exported to China due to faulty brakes, China's quality watchdog said on Thursday.

The recall will cover the X5 model's year 2007 to 2010 versions with V-8 engines, according to a statement from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

The affected vehicles were manufactured from May 9, 2006 to March 18, 2010, the statement said.

The brake booster of those vehicles may be polluted by lubricating oil leaked from the vacuum pump. If it happens, the brake assist system may not work properly and cause safety hazards, the statement said.

BMW's China subsidiary will contact affected car owners to replace defective parts free of charge.
