Border trade

China and India restarted border trade last Thursday through Tibet's Nathu La Pass, a historic trading route that had been closed for 44 years.

At 4,545 metres above sea level, the Nathu La Pass was once a pivotal point on the ancient Silk Road. Its name in Tibetan translates as "the place of the heaviest blizzards". Located approximately 460 kilometres from Lhasa, the Tibetan regional capital, and 550 kilometres from the Indian coastal city of Calcutta, the pass was once an important trade passage between China and India. It was closed in 1962 due to border conflicts.
